Stephen Ministry is a one-to-one ministry of support for individuals who are going through a time of personal crisis or transition.Is this a counseling ministry?
No, Stephen Ministers are not counselors as such. Stephen Ministers are trained to listen to you and help you think, talk and reflect on your circumstances and feelings in a way that is healing and God-honoring.
What kinds of situations warrant the help of a Stephen Minister?We have helped individuals in all sorts of situations – those who have lost a loved one, who are experiencing depression, who have lost jobs, who are cut off from family, who are dealing with chronic and terminal illness.
What qualifications do Stephen Ministers have?
Stephen Ministers are people who have a desire to be used of God in the lives of others. They have gifts in the area of care and concern. They have learned to listen and know how to resist the temptation to ‘fix’ people’s problems. They have also completed 50 hours of training.
How long and how often will a Stephen Minister meet with a care receiver?
Most Stephen Ministers meet once a week for about an hour with their care receivers. Most relationships last between 3-18 months.
How does confidentiality work in this ministry?
If you or someone you know is assigned a Stephen Minister, you can be sure that everything talked about will be kept in strict confidence. Even identities are kept in strict confidence.
